Typical Day
When you’re working on a trading floor there really is no “typical” day on the job. The enviroment on our desk is not as fast-paced or “minute to minute” as a flow product sales and trading desk, but it can very quickly transition from a quiet day to a busy day. Because of this, organization and time management are very valuable skills to have.
The Structured Products Group structures and markets Principal Protected notes issued by the Bank of Nova Scotia to retail and institutional clients in Canada and Internationally. My day generally starts around 7:30 when I read over the headlines to find out what’s going on in the markets and take a look at my emails. The rest of the day tends to be driven by what senior structurers and marketers have on the go. Usually, this consists of preparing term sheets and product presentations for brokers, pricing up potential deals, corresponding and providing support for our wholesalers that work out of the office, and providing client support to the Investment Advisor network.
The floor usually starts to get quiet around 5pm, but it’s a good chance to catch up on anything you haven’t had time to get to during the day. There’s no ‘regular’ end of day time on the desk - tight deadlines or last minute requests from clients sometimes mean staying later than usual, but for the most part, my day wraps up around 5:45, after I’ve taken a few minutes to plan out my to-do list for the next day.
