Typical Day
Corporate Banking provides loans to large companies, and the loans are uniquely structured to fit the client’s needs and credit rating. My role as an Associate in Corporate Banking is to provide support to Directors on a portfolio of approximately 20 companies. Although we often work on new deals, we also spend a lot of time building the relationship with our existing clients, executing amendments to existing loans, and performing credit risk analysis on an ongoing basis.
I get to my desk at around 8:15 am and spend some time reading through the news, focusing on articles that are relevant to my portfolio of companies. If I’m working on a new deal, I like to check in with the Director in the morning to discuss next steps and ask any questions that I have. Although my days vary quite a bit, my primary responsibilities include preparing written presentations, financial modeling and analysis, performing company and industry due diligence, and reviewing and negotiating loan documentation. I am typically juggling multiple tasks at any given time and most deals have fixed deadlines, and therefore time management and organization are a must.
I like that as an Associate I get to have a lot of client interaction, and time spent interacting with clients will increase as I progress in Corporate Banking. In addition, my job includes frequent cross-functional teamwork with other areas of Scotiabank, including Investment Banking, M&A, Global Capital Markets, and Global Risk Management.
