Equity Research conducts economic and financial research and analysis, specializing in oil and gas equities and economics. I find one of the most interesting aspects of our business is the variety of work. What we do is very dynamic. We monitor and interpret macro and micro events that are impacting the equity markets.
Although every day is different, there is some consistency to the structure of my workday. Our office hours begin at 6:45 a.m. I call in to our morning meeting at 7:30 a.m., in which our equity research analysts, salespeople, and traders establish the day’s trading strategies. We discuss market insights, trade ideas and flow. Throughout the day I watch the market and our covered stocks closely. I look for any relevant news in my sector and regularly update my analyst and our sales desk.
Outside of the reporting season, I mostly prepare models, reports, and analyst marketing presentations for our clients and sales desk. I sometimes attend investor conferences or training sessions. During earnings season, when companies we cover report quarterly results, I assist my equity analyst in determining how investors will likely respond to a company’s results and relay that interpretation to our traders. I assist in updating our financial model, operating and financial estimates, Net Asset Value analysis, share price target and stock rating for the company. I also write formal interpretations of the results for publication and distribution to clients.
This job has given me the opportunity to stay on top of the market and learn new things. The challenging work and the fast pace keep the days interesting.
