There are 36 ETF providers in Canada with 863 ETFs (+150 YoY) that have combined AuM of CAD 188B (+19% YoY).
We estimate investors traded CAD 5.7B in Canadian ETFs last week (with broad market ETFs, led by XIU [CAD 540M], XIC [CAD 284M] and XSP [CAD 175M] being the most actively traded).
Investors put money into fixed income ETFs (with CAD 479M of inflows) and equity ETFs (with CAD 67M of inflows). Overall, Canadian ETFs had CAD 631M (+0.3% of AuM) in net creations last week.
Investors favored low volatility, leverage/inverse, and communications in the equity space, target date, aggregate, ultra-short and investment grade in the fixed income space, and natural gas and silver in the commodity space.
CIBC AM and Purpose gained the most market share last week with the largest inflows (as % of AuM) at the provider level.
New this week: iShares Core MSCI EAFE IMI Index ETF (XEF/U) and iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (XUS/U) will be listed on October 15, 2019.
