Enabling the Caribbean through local presence and global connectivity

The Caribbean’s economic landscape continues to evolve, creating opportunities for investment in infrastructure, energy, trade and economic development. As organizations across the region pursue growth and resilience, access to capital, strategic advice and market expertise is essential to turning opportunities into outcomes.

Scotiabank has maintained a presence in the Caribbean for more than a century, combining deep local market knowledge with the capabilities of a leading North American financial institution. Through its Global Banking and Markets platform and broader network across Canada, the United States, Mexico and Latin America, the Bank works with corporate, institutional and public sector clients to provide access to financing, capital markets expertise and international investors, helping them navigate increasingly complex opportunities and requirements across the region and beyond.

“The Caribbean has always been an important part of Scotiabank’s story. Our focus today is the same as it was generations ago: building long-term relationships, staying close to our clients and communities, and helping people and businesses achieve their goals. In a world that continues to change, we remain deeply connected to the region, committed to its future and focused on being the bank of choice for our clients,” says Jabar Singh, President of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.

Our model is built on connecting those capabilities to help clients achieve their strategic objectives,” says Agostina Pechi, Managing Director, Head of Global Capital Markets, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Supporting strategic transactions across the region

Scotiabank’s commitment to the Caribbean is reflected in its participation in transactions that support infrastructure development, energy security, economic diversification and capital formation throughout the region.

Grand Bahama Power

Most recently, Scotiabank supported the Government of The Bahamas' acquisition of 100% of GBPC from Emera Inc. through a refinance of existing GBPC debt and participation in US$200 million bridge-to-bond financing facility, including a US$50 million hold, to fund the Government's acquisition.

It enabled local ownership of a critical energy infrastructure asset and highlights Scotiabank’s experience in structuring financing solutions for strategic public-sector initiatives.

Manzanillo Gas & Power

In the Dominican Republic, Scotiabank served as Senior Mandated Lead Arranger, Letter of Credit Issuer and Hedge Provider for the Manzanillo Gas & Power project, one of the largest infrastructure developments undertaken in the country’s history.

Working alongside a syndicate of international and regional lenders, the Bank helped arrange a US$1.1 billion senior secured credit facilities to finance the development of two combined-cycle gas turbine power units with a combined generation capacity of approximately 860MW, together with the associated marine infrastructure for the receipt, storage and regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The transaction brought together multiple financing partners to support a project expected to strengthen power generation capacity and contribute to the country’s long-term energy infrastructure objectives.

Pelican Energy TCI

In 2025, Scotiabank supported Vision Ridge Partners' acquisition of FortisTCI, the sole regulated electricity provider serving the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the subsequent establishment of Pelican Energy TCI. The transaction represented a significant infrastructure investment in the Caribbean utilities sector and demonstrated the Bank's ability to deliver integrated financing, capital markets and advisory solutions for complex, strategically important transactions.

As part of the change-of-control process, Scotiabank acted as Administrative Agent, Sole Bookrunner and Sole Lead Arranger on a US$100.7 million bridge financing facility. The financing supported the acquisition and facilitated the refinancing of existing senior note obligations, providing an efficient interim funding solution ahead of the company's long-term capital markets execution. The Bank also served as Ratings Advisor, supporting engagement with external rating agencies and helping position the company for its long-term financing strategy

Following the acquisition, Scotiabank further supported Pelican Energy TCI by serving as Sole Lead Placement Agent on its US$115 million private placement of senior notes. Structured across five- and seven-year tranches, the offering attracted strong interest from institutional investors, including existing noteholders.

A platform designed for a connected region

The Caribbean continues to attract investment across sectors including energy, infrastructure, transportation, tourism, telecommunications and financial services. Scotiabank’s regional presence, combined with its global banking and capital markets platform, enables the Bank to support clients as they pursue growth opportunities, access capital and navigate evolving market conditions across the Caribbean and beyond.
